Ladakh 360

Leh Palace, also known as Lhachen Palkhar, is a 17th-century royal residence located on Namgyal Hill overlooking Leh in Ladakh, India. Built under King Sengge Namgyal of the Namgyal dynasty, the nine-storey structure exemplifies medieval Tibetan architecture. It is now a major heritage monument maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Key facts
Construction: 17th century, by King Sengge Namgyal

Location: Namgyal Hill, Leh, Ladakh, India

Architecture: Tibetan style; built of stone, mud, wood, and sand

Floors: Nine levels (upper royal quarters, lower storage/stables)

Current use: Museum and viewing terrace

Historical background
Completed during the height of the Namgyal dynasty, Leh Palace served as the political and cultural center of Ladakh until the Dogra invasion of the 19th century. After General Zorawar Singh’s conquest in 1834, the royal family relocated to Stok Palace, leaving Leh Palace abandoned. Despite partial ruin, it endures as a powerful symbol of Ladakhi sovereignty and artistry.

Architecture and design
Inspired by the Potala Palace in Tibet, the structure blends seamlessly into the slope of Namgyal Hill. Its thick mud-brick walls regulate temperature in Ladakh’s extreme climate, while carved wooden balconies open toward the Indus Valley and Zanskar Range. Distinctive features include prayer rooms, a Durbar Hall, and murals dating back more than four centuries.

Cultural and artistic significance
Within its restored galleries are thangka scrolls, royal crowns, and jewelry illustrating Ladakh’s Buddhist heritage. The palace is an important cultural node linking nearby monasteries such as Namgyal Tsemo Gompa and Shanti Stupa. It remains a vantage point for panoramic views of Leh, Stok Kangri, and the surrounding Himalayas.

Visiting information
Open daily from about 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Leh Palace can be reached via a short uphill walk or taxi from Leh Market. Entry is nominally ₹20–₹25 for Indian citizens and ₹100–₹300 for foreign visitors. The best visiting months are May to September, when clear skies highlight the arid mountain landscape.
