Thiksey Monastery was established in the mid-15th century by Palden Zangpo, a disciple of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug school. The complex cascades down twelve stories, containing temples, assembly halls, monks’ quarters, and shrines. Its whitewashed walls and red-ochre accents create a visually unified structure overlooking the Indus Valley. The main prayer hall houses fine murals and a high-ceilinged assembly space used for daily chanting.
Religious Significance
The monastery is an active center of Buddhist learning and practice, home to around a hundred monks. Its centerpiece, the two-story Maitreya Buddha statue—representing the future Buddha—commemorates the 1970 visit of the 14th Dalai Lama. The site also preserves ancient thangkas, manuscripts, and statues reflecting Tibetan Buddhist cosmology and art.
Festivals and Visiting
Thiksey hosts the annual Gustor Festival (usually in October–November), featuring sacred Cham masked dances symbolizing good’s triumph over evil. Visitors can witness monastic rituals, early-morning prayers, and panoramic views of the Indus Valley. Easily accessible from Leh, Thiksey remains a key spiritual and cultural landmark on Ladakh’s Buddhist circuit.
